PLACES TO VISIT IN DAR ES SALAAM
There are numerous places in Dar es Salaam worth visiting. They are interesting to locals as well as foreigners. The Remnants of colonial presence, both German and British, can still be seen in the landmarks and architecture around the city.
Make it a point to visit the following places:
Nyerere Cultural Centre
Next to the Movenpick Hotel. Traditional Art and Paintings exposition. Also training on handicrafts. The distinctive Makuti-palm roofed building houses the Nyumba ya Saana, the House of Art. Begun in 1972 by an American nun, the co-operative supports many young artists, with work ranging from batiks through carvings, oil paintings, pottery, weaving and clothing. Formerly known as 'nyumba ya sanaa' or 'art house'.
The Askari Monument
It stands on the round about connecting Samora Avenue and Azikiwe Street. This monument stands where the previous statue of Herman Von Wissman was erected in 1911. It was put in commemoration of fallen heroes of the World Wars.
The Clock Tower
It is located along Samora Avenue standing at the roundabout that connects Nkrumah, Uhuru, Railway and India Streets. Built in 1961 it was put up to inaugurate Dar es Salaam elevation to city status.
Republic Fountain
Just in front of Mnazi Moja dispensary. This landmark was built for the country's first Republic celebrations in 1962.
Uhuru Torch
It is located just a few meters away from the republic fountain. This was built in celebration of Tanzanias Independence in 1961.
Botanical Gardens
It was established by the Germans in 1906 and after WW1, the British maintained the garden.
The garden is well manicured with variety of plant and flower species. It also has a green house. Incase you are lucky you may see peacocks in the area.
National Museum
Opened in 1940, it houses many historical treasures the most important of which are the remains of the first humans discovered by Dr.Louis Leakey at Olduvai Gorge.
Ocean Road Hospital
Built 1897 it has undergone total rehabilitation. The small domed building between the main hospital and the old doctor's house where Dr.Koch discovered the malaria and tuberculosis viruses.
Village Museum
Located along Bagamoyo Road, it holds collection of onsite traditional buildings from different places and ethnic groups in Tanzania.
Rita Hayworth House
Found in oysterbay, it was of this famous hollywood actress.

Dar es Salaam boasts of having beautiful unspoiled beaches. The most popular beaches are Oyster Bay, Msasani Peninsula, Mikocheni, Kawe and Kunduchi.
Coco Beach, also known as Oyster Bay Beach is a popular and frequently visited spot. It is clean and has police patrol during the day. The beach is famous for jogging, beach volley ball and swimming.
Seven kilometers north of the city, to Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve offers good snorkeling and diving sites for those who want to explore the water. The reserve boasts beautiful beaches, secluded islands, and many varieties of marine species.

MUSEUMS
The National Museum
It is Located on Shaban Robert Street. It was Originally built in 1940 by the British as King George V memorial a new building was added in 1963. The museum displays exhibits ethnography, archaeology, and history. Including, the skull of Australopithecus Boisei, which was discovered in 1959 at Olduvai Gorge by the late Dr.Leakey, antique tribal artifacts and some fascinating World War One memorabilia.
